Best Tours - DC Presents:
- The Gargoyle Who Ate DC!
When: Spring and Summer Gargoyle Tours
The Third Saturday in May, June and July at 3:00 PM
May 16, June 20 and July 18
Always a favorite, we'll be doing an outside tour of the
gargoyles at the National Cathedral. These imaginative carvings
depict monsters, dogs, cats, birds, horses and even one of the carvers,
whose hot temper lead to him being protrayed as a devil whose head
explodes in a mushroom cloud!
I had the good forture to know one of the last of
the old master carvers, Constantine Seferlis, who's sense of humor
could no be surpressed. We will trace his style as it developed
from traditional carving of little beasties to lighthearted portrtayals
of the donors, often times with a visual pun on their name, career or
hobby.
We'll also see several differnt themes to the gargoyes.
Some have religious or moral themes, some realistically portray
animals, and others are works of total imagination!
Bring
binoculars! The gargoyles can be very high up,
though some of them are close enough to almost touch!
